Welcome to Teignworthy Brewery

We are a small independent brewery based in the Victorian building of Tuckers Maltings in Newton Abbot, South Devon.  We have been making quality real ales here for thirteen years, and supply pubs in the local area and in South Somerset.

The brewing of ale takes place most days during the week and uses entirely traditional methods.  The brewery is based on a 'tower' principle, as used in the Victorian era.  This means that the malt (from Tuckers of course!) is infused with hot liquor (water) to make a malt extract.  This, in turn, is boiled with traditional English hops.  These processes take place on the 2nd and 3rd floors.  The hopped malt extract then passes to the 1st floor where it is cooled rapidly with a heat exchanger to a temperature of 16 degrees celcius, and then placed in an open "fermenting square".  Yeast is added and for the following three days the yeast ferments the ale.  During this time a large foaming canopy rests over the ale.

Brewing at Teignworthy

John and Rachel Lawton together established a victorian tower brewery at the famous Tucker's Maltings site in 1994. The site is in Newton Abbot on the banks of the River Teign.
